About the Artist

A native of Alexander City, Alabama and the Lake Martin area, John Denney uses his artistic talent to transform nature and wildlife into spectacular works of art. A self-taught artist and photographer, John has become known for this spectacular sunrise photos as well as his realistic wildlife paintings.

John has won numerous awards for both his paintings and photography over the years including the prestigious Alabama Duck Stamp Competition three times - in 2017, 2013 and 2008, and was a runner up in 2012.  He has also won awards with his entries in the Alabama Wildlife Federation Art Show, including Best of Show in 2011 and Best of Wildlife in 2010 and 2016 and the Award of Excellence in 2014. In 2014 he was awarded an Ozzie Award for his original paintings that appeared in the national quail hunting publication, Covey Rise magazine.

In addition to his paintings, John’s photography has won numerous awards and has appeared in Ducks Unlimited magazine, Alabama Outdoors magazine, and Alabama Living magazine as well as being displayed in many prominent businesses and private collections, including Russell Medical Center, Jackson Hospital in Montgomery and the UAB Cancer Center.

John's graphic art work is found nationwide on anything from t-shirt designs, to catalogs and even in major motion pictures like the Clint Eastwood movie Million Dollar Baby. His clients include Ducks Unlimited, Mossy Oak, Duck Commander, National Wild Turkey Federation, Cabela’s, Bass Pro Shops, Nike and others.

John continues to hone his craft and expand into other artistic endeavors by taking on projects outside of the wildlife and nature sphere, striving to become not only a top artist in the areas he loves, but also to become an all around remarkably gifted artist.

A three time duck stamp winner


John Denney has won the prestigious Alabama Duck Stamp Competition three times. In 2008, 2013 and 2017, and was a runner up in 2012. A rare feat for any wildlife artist. His brother Jim, also an artist won the competition in 2007, 2011, 2015 and in 2019 both dominating the contest for over a decade.

John’s art has received many awards. In addition to art and photography John is an avid outdoors man, accomplished tennis player and enjoys kayaking, fishing, and spending time outdoors.
